COOKEVILLE -- A man with a gun robbed a Cookeville drug store this morning.
He wanted only drugs, not cash.
It happened about 7:40 a.m. at the Walgreen store on S. Willow Avenue, according to Cookeville Police Detectives Carl Sells and James Lane.
"A white male dressed in blue jeans, a dark colored hoodie, and a ball cap entered the store at the front and walked to the pharmacy, which is at the back, displayed a small caliber handgun, and demanded a particular type of drugs," Detective Sells said.
Investigators are not releasing information about the type of drugs the man asked for, but he was given more than 500 of the pills and then left the store and got into a green colored car which was possibly a Ford Contour or a Ford Taurus, the detective said.
The robber was apparently desperate for the drug he demanded, Sells said.
"He appeared nervous and did not talk much, and he never asked for money, only the drugs."
Noting the store's location at "a very busy intersection" and the time of day when the robbery occurred, a time when traffic is heavy and police officers are often in the area, Detective Sells said, "It indicates someone who is desperate, someone willing to subject themselves to a high risk to get a certain drug."
The man is believed to be in his mid-20's to early 30's, Sells said.
Several officers combed the area looking for the car immediately after the robbery, and were continuing the search later this morning.
Among those who worked the case in addition to Sells and Lane were Officers Ron Franklin, Jon Giezentanner, Eric Hall, and Sgt. Steve Taylor and Sgt. Steve Marcrom.
Detectives say they believe the man was in the parking lot of the store for a time before and immediately after the robbery, and they urge anyone who was there and saw anything that might help in the investigation to contact police.
"Several people may have been in the store or near there when this was happening and may not have realized what was happening," Sells said. "If so, and if they can remember anything that might help us, we ask that they call us."
Anyone with information may call Detective Lane or Detective Sells at (931) 526-2125.

Yeah, my co-workers were talking about that this morning.
The pills were probably were more than the cash in all of the registers at that time, too.
What action should people expect Walgreen's to take regarding the incident, moving forward?
