Little Falls is located at the end of Little Falls Rd just at the top of Spencer mountain. There is a four wheeler trail that's well maintained which leads to the falls and the stream. The geology is primarily limestone with some conglomerates. The falls drop sixty - eighty feet then into an unseen cave, common in karst topography. Not far from there the stream resurfaces. Just north of the falls is an escarpment popular to locals for throwing their trash off of. Pictured you can see remains of cars, lots of tires, washers and dryers ... a kitchen sink. Most of it appears to be materials from a class II waste disposal site but a few things made me question the safety of the local water supply. I was at a loss to understand the motivation for this behavior until I got back to my friend's house. He was showing me around his place and commented that he would take his trash off as he pointed to a pile of rubbish, but it costs 15 cents a pound to dispose of. What we saw at Little Falls constituted several tons of trash. I'm not sure of the politics of it, but I suspect that Van Buren county could fund disposal of class ii wastes and prevent random mountainside dumping.

Your site is the best place on the web to find beautiful scenes of rivers and waterfalls juxtaposed with redneck trash.
Pic # 16 shows what remains of a meth-lab trailer that exploded nearby.
I'm not sure of the politics of it, but I suspect that Van Buren county can't afford to fund anything seeing as how the gross property tax revenue for the county is exactly $14 and residents don't pay sales tax on selling pot & meth to each other. However, they might be able to reach a trade agreement with Putnam County where they export all of their broken appliances and old tires to Ensor Sink and Tires-'O-Plenty Cave in exchange for...

Pretty pictures! Very Godly. That reminds me, have you read Richard Dawkins new book?
Chuck - 1/26/2007 12:27:00 PM
Not sure what godly has to do with the pictures - and no I haven't read "The God Delusion." I don't think that I will read it as I regard any attempt to prove or disprove God as futile. My decision to be an atheist is the abandonment of that path so that I may better spend the little time I have here. I am also trying to come to peace with Christianity. I doubt his book would further that agenda. Dawkins is a great and even visionary scientist, but his discourse tends to polarize people in both camps. I would like to follow a path of gentle persuasion more like that of Dr. Shermer.

Beautiful & disturbing pictures. I think I could find a use for discarded stoves, dishwashers, etc. Why not use the frame as a giant planter container? It would be about the right height to cultivate, tend and harvest with out back breaking labor. It would keep rabbits, & ground hogs from grazing. They could be arranged in a way as to create a barrier. Think of it as an urban maze or even fencing. Oh well, it's late & my imaganation is running away with me. I stuck your car registeration & sticker for your tag under your door. I went to work but you were not there. Love Mama

Interesting suggestions. Perhaps you've heard, or seen pictures of the playgrounds built from discarded tires? It's a similar idea. Unfortunately the world doesn't have enough creative people to implement that idea on a large scale. The waste far exceeds the demand for such things.
