COOKEVILLE -- Police say they now know the identity of the gunman who robbed a Cookeville pharmacy last Thursday morning, demanding only drugs.
But they have not yet arrested him, and they are hoping the public can help locate him or that he can be persuaded to turn himself in.
Cookeville Police detectives took warrants on Friday charging Randall E. Crawford, 37, of Gainesboro, with armed robbery of the Walgreen store on Willow Ave. on Jan. 11, according to Capt. Nathan Honeycutt.
But as of this morning, officers had not located Crawford, and they hope the public can help.
However, police say they want anyone who has information on Crawford's whereabouts to use caution and to call police instead of confronting him.
Or those with information may choose to call Crime Stoppers, which pays cash for clues that help police solve crimes.
Chief Terry said Randall E. Crawford should be considered "armed and dangerous."
Crawford is 5 ft. 11 inches tall, weighs 165 pounds, and has brown hair and blue eyes.
Police allege that it was Crawford who walked into the Walgreen store about 7:40 a.m. Thursday, pointed a small caliber handgun at pharmacists, and demanded a certain type of drugs.
The robber, who appeared very nervous, took a large quantity of the pills and left the store. He reportedly lingered for at least a short time in the parking lot before driving away in a green car believed to be a Ford Contour or Taurus.
Detectives said the robber apparently was desperate for the drugs he stole. Officers searched the area for the car, but did not find it in the area that day.
Detective Sgt. James Lane later linked the suspect to the robbery and took a warrant on Friday charging Randall E. Crawford with the crime.
"We would like to encourage Crawford to turn himself in," Chief Terry said this morning.
Anyone with information should contact the Cookeville Police Dept. at (931) 526-2125 or Crime Stoppers at 520-7867.
