The Role of Myth 2006/01/21 2 comments
Myth has been used by cultures to answer the questions that have either no answers, or answers which are beyond their answering due to their level of technology. Why we ask these questions without answers is equally as interesting, but is not the direction I wish to go.
The role of myth, traditionally, has been to answer these questions in such a way that doesn't come into conflict with our history, and morals. And in doing so allows a culture to establish a philosophy.
In any given culture a value is placed on any of those attributes and as individual attribute boundaries expand, conflict occurs.
Myth now has an additional attribute to have boundary disputes with, science. And therefore it's role is modified in the individual, and cultural perceptions.
In my opinion it's not wrong to hold a belief based on myth. I do, and I'm sure most people do. The difference is people's unwillingness to let go of these beliefs in light of better evidence.
Therefore, my concept of myth serves to not hold back belief in scientific progress.
It is in place to placate that part of my mind which requires there to be such answers in place, either correct or incorrect.

Stab at the Heart of Darkness 2006/01/19 4 comments
I recall an age before I was critical enough to accept God's teachings as anything more than what they really are. Myth.
I had a good friend who continued to ask my those probing questions without answer. My response was simply, you must believe.
In those primeval days it was only absolutism that prevailed. Not an idea that the Bible, or Christianity, but an Idea that Absolutism must prevail. All assumptions were based off that. It didn't take long for me to learn of other absolutes, and so-called absolutes before I became a reactionary.
The very thought of an absolute was inflammatory. Nothing was an absolute. So if everything wasn't absolute, then what was?
So much for ethics, morals, mortals, and the guns that may be fired in my direction. I retaliated against the institution that tried to bury me in its bosom. I stabbed at its heart from such a close place.

Walk the Line 2006/01/16 6 comments
I have yet to see this movie, or even observe a trailor for it. Yet I will draw your attention to it, so that you might express your 4th degree connection with some famous movie stars.
You know me.
My cousin, Clay Steakley plays W.S. 'Fluke' Holland in the movie Walk the Line (official, IMDB, trailor) alongside such celebrities as Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon.
Who are really just normal people like us.
But the important thing is that my cousin is doing well for himself.
When we last spoke to each other he was headlining the original "Edge of the Cumberland" concert (for you kids, it became Buzzfest when KDF became The Buzz, but that was still 3 years away).
He opened for all these bands, in this order: Ammonia (the drugs and money song, remember?), Brother Cain, God Lives Underwater, and one of the coolest bands ever, The Toadies.
Clay, hope you continue to do well. I'll be observing from afar.

You're guily because you don't know why. I'm guilty because I do nothing about it.

Medicare Madness 2006/01/01 15 comments
Medicare Part D was rolled out today, 01/01/06.
And they dropped the ball.

All of the major claims processors (Humana, Paid, AARP, to name a few) had issues. On a whole, it looked as if their software engineers had missed deadlines, and failed to understand basic integration into pharmacy software.
What this means for Layman Pharmacycustomer is that what you were told by your new Medicare Part D provider is not true. At least not today, and probably not for a few more days.
I ran a prescription for oxycodone that returned a $335 co-pay. The lady, understandably surprised tells me it's supposed to be $5. She's right, it is. But I can't sell it to her, because I havn't been paid the remainder because the insurers software isn't working.
The insurer calls us up and tells us to override the co-pay. Who will keep track of that? The way things move where I work it will be buried in a pile of similar claims and we'll be lucky to see payment for any of them.
Let me politely rebutt the insurers for the sake of all pharmacies across the country: We will not pay for your mistakes. You missed the deadlines, you're software doesn't work, you can pay for it buddy.
And it's a shame that so many customers got shafted. Let's hope that most people weren't counting on everything to be working smoothly and were prepared.

Happy New Year to everyone!
I played the designated driver, and boy do I feel good about myself.
I also took some video of our party, so if you weren't there you can be jealous and see us "kicking it."
