Electric flight is taking off at the Airfoilers field! There is great interest in electric-powered planes at our field, due in part to the advances in brushless motor technology and lithium-polymer batteries.
Members' interests include sport planes, glow-to-electric conversions, 3-D, electric ducted fan, electrically-boosted sailplanes, speed 400 sport flyers, electrified old-timers, indoor, and all sorts of park-flyers. It is now possible to easily get ten to twenty minute high-performance flights from electric sport planes. One of the advantages of electric planes is the low fuss aspect of not needing much field support equipment. Grab a plane and radio, a couple of battery packs and charger and you are in business. Having a charged, ready-to-fly plane in your vehicle, enables you to get in some winter flying after work, before the sun goes down. For some, this can make a difference between flying and not flying during the winter months.
When you combine the quiet unobtrusiveness of electrics with small field capabilities of the park-flyers, many more flying opportunities present themselves. School yards, soccer fields and even large backyards, become new close-to-home flying fields that can be visited frequently. Just the thing for filling in-between those weekly treks to the "real" model field.
