Next Contest  May 3&4,  2008

The Airfoilers include a group of R/C soaring enthusiasts who enjoy sport flying as well  as regional and national contesting. The club holds a thermal duration contest in the spring and the fall of the year, and a RES contest during the summer. It is believed that the Airfoilers host the longest-running annual thermal-duration contest in the nation. Our first annual contest occurred in May 1971 and has been held uninterrupted every year since.

The club owns and maintains two Bat winches and Davey-style retrievers. both are mounted on a trailer for easy transportation to the field. The equipment is available for use by any club member for sport flying, and is used in Airfoilers sanctioned contests. Kendall McDonald and Herb Rindfleisch store and maintains the units mounted on  trailers.

Several club members also have privately owned launch equipment which they bring to the field. Members with trailer mounted winch & retriever units include Brian Smith and Chuck Anderson. When this equipment is at the field, others are welcome to use it.

The current group of active sailplane flyers include (sorry if I left anyone out!): Chuck Anderson, Kendall McDonald, Herb Rindfleisch, Tony&Mark Kummerow,  Harry McDonald, Tom Towry, Ben Cleveland and Lee Webster, Brian Smith.

In the spring, summer, and fall, sport flying often occurs during the weekdays and on Saturday and Sunday mornings. During the time of year when daylight allows, there is usually an after work flying session once a week. Since there are a number of retired folks in the club, there is sailplane flying going on during week days. Just stop by the field and see what's happening! If you are traveling through and want to fly, give Herb a call at 931-455-1836or email me at hprind@charter.net and I will make arrangements for equipment to be at the field for your use.

Pictured below is one of our launching systems. Note that there is an automatic line pick-up on all of our retrievers. This system is so simple to use that at times we have allowed a 12 year old to run it! A flyer can also launch and retrieve on his own.
