The 1850 Census of McNairy County Tennessee had the following information:
McNairy County Tennessee was formed October 8, 1823 from Hardin County. It
was one of the counties established out of the Chickasaw Treaty Lands, known
as part of the Western District. It was named in honor of Judge John McNairy
of North Carolina.
The first court was held in the home of Abel V. Murray in January 1824. Those
present were Colonel James Warren, John M. Meeks, Judge John W and Marcus J.
Wright, William G. Jopling, John G. Gooch, Major Benjamin Wright, William S.
Wisdom, Henry S. Wilson, Maclin Cross and Joseph Barnett.
The first county seat was named Purdy in honor of John Purdy, the Surveyor-General
of the District. In 1890 Selmer was named as the county seat when a new courthouse
was located there. He was married to Docia VINSON (daughter of
Alexander VINSON and Amanda CARTER).
Docia VINSON was born on Aug 25 1881. She died on Feb 8 1965 in McNairy
County Tennessee. She was buried in Mt Vinson Cemetery McNairy County Tennessee.
